Teachers have a responsibility to empower students. Teaching is more than knowing your content well. Teachers who rise to this awesome responsibility have the ability to confront many of society’s pressing challenges but more importantly help support a room full of young people to do the same, in their own way. ”

Christopher’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Mathematics

Why Mathematics

“I think mathematics can be a gatekeeper to college and careers that offer students a pathway to economic security. Far too often, we fail to take a growth mindset to mathematics. I see my role as someone who can help facilitate a more positive approach to mathematics learning, while at the same time working with students to develop the conceptual understanding and key mathematical skills needed for future success.”

Professional Experience

Before beginning his teaching career, Christopher worked as an intern in the Rhode Island Department of Education in the office of Educator Excellence. His work focused around teacher certification, including supporting the ways the state reviews and supports teacher preparation programs.

He also worked as an educational research assistant on projects related to teacher coaching, classroom interruptions, and teacher strikes. Christopher held many positions as an undergraduate student. For four years, he worked as an in-class high school tutor, and for several semesters, he worked as a teaching assistant at Brown across a variety of subjects. He also worked as a mathematics instructor at Brown Summer High School.

Christopher will begin his teaching career at Hope High School during the 2018–2019 school year.

Volunteer Experience

Christopher previously coordinated a large tutoring program that recruits, trains, and places college students into Hope High School during the day and after school. He looks forward to continuing to provide support to the program in his new teaching role at the school.

Hobbies

Christopher enjoys traveling and going on walks with good company, whether in the city or in the woods. His goal is to visit all 50 states.
